A dream was born in July of 1986. At that time, Jackie Sparks (occupational therapist) and JoAnn Kelly (speech pathologist) were working with three multi-handicapped young children. Seeing a huge void in the Mt. Washington Valley for special needs child service agencies, Sparks and Kelly decided to open a center specializing in early intervention and inclusive childcare. Children Unlimited, Inc., opened its doors on July 1, 1986 and so began a long history of caring.
One of the first programs in New Hampshire to integrate typically developing and special needs children, CU quickly developed a fine reputation as one of the top children's centers in the area. By October of 1986, the local school district asked CU to start a preschool that would also accommodate special needs children.
In 2006, CU celebrated its 20th anniversary, having grown from a small center with five staff members and twenty children, to twenty-four staff members now serving nearly 300 families throughout the community. Then, on June 7, 2008, Children Unlimited reached the next milestone with the opening of our 8,000 square foot state-of-the-art special needs preschool and childcare facility. Built with funds generously gifted by our community, CU can now continue its dedication to offering integrated preschool and childcare programs, while also launching several new programs desperately needed by local families.
